Dr. Sommer worked at Greifswald University, Germany from 1994 – 2002; thereafter, in 2002, he started working at Maastricht University Medical Centre, The Netherlands and is currently employed there.
In 2008, for the first time in the Netherlands, he started ultrasound-guided interventional pain procedures in chronic pain patients. As a faculty member of the World Academy of Pain Medicine Ultrasonography, WAPMU, he was certified as interventional Sonographist as one of the first in 2014 in Miami (CIPS).
He has delivered numerous presentations and lectures, nationally and internationally, on ultrasound in pain medicine, and several lectures to the students at the University of Maastricht. Dr. Sommer is a faculty member of the World Institute of Pain, WIP, and an examiner of the Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice, FIPP, as well as for the Certified Interventional Pain Sonographist, CIPS.
He is a permanent faculty member at the chronic pain workshop of the London Society of Regional Anaesthesia, LSORA, held once annually.
He organised and continues to organize various courses on ultrasound in the Netherlands and is a co-organizer of ultrasound workshops nationally for the WIP.
Currently, he is Vice Chair of the Department of Chronic Pain Medicine at the University Hospital Maastricht, The Netherlands.
